Journey of Telecommunication

Bengal Police Wireless started functioning from 1st week of May, 1946 with 51 Wireless Stations located over 5 Ranges in 26 Districts of undivided Bengal centering its Head Quarters at 2-Queens Park, Ballygunj, Calcutta. Lt. Col. A.K.Ghosh was appointed as first Superintendent of Police, Wireless, Bengal on 01-09-1945. The units of Wireless Stations started its operation with the strength following Wireless personnel:-

One Technical Workshop was established at the HQ. for maintenance and repairing of Wireless Sets by the Asstt. Supervisors (Mechanical). The Asstt. Supervisors (Operational) and Operators were posted to different Wireless Stations of Bengal for Operational work.  

In 1952, the Wireless HQ of West Bengal Police was shifted to Wakely House 3-Moore Avenue, Tollygunj, Calcutta 700 040 from Queens Park. 

On 25-01-1959, the Administrative Building along with Technical Building of West Bengal Police Wireless HQ was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. B.C.Roy and thereafter, the Wireless HQ was shifted to the new Buildings from Wakely House. 

In the meantime, the subordinate staff of Wireless Section was declared as regular Police force by a Government Order No. 34 dated 12-08-1960. It was stated that Wireless Inspectors are equivalent to Inspector of Police, Wireless Supervisors Grade-I and Grade-II as Sub-Inspector of Police and Wireless Operators as Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police for the purpose of discipline, control and other privileges. 

In 1983, West Bengal Police Wireless was renamed as Telecommunication, West Bengal. The Police Telecommunication HQ. West Bengal Police Telecommunication is now situated at 3-Manik Bandhopadhyay Sarani, Kolkata 700 040, as the Street name rechristened after the noted writer by the KMC authority. 

This Department caters to the need for real time communication from Camp / Out Post level to the West Bengal Police HQ throughout Districts and Sub-Divisional HQ having the following most reliable as well as modern Communication Systems of the age:-

  •  HF Communication

  •  E-mail (Intranet) Communication

  • POLNET Communication
